Meet Janine!

Janine, an Executive Assistant, has been with NewRange for over a year.

A Range local, Janine grew up in Ely and now lives there with her family. NewRange was Janine’s first opportunity to work in the mining industry. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in education, she was a fourth-grade teacher for many years before working at a non-profit organization for at-risk youth. Janine gained administrative and organizational experience as a retail buyer before starting her current role. She has also spent more than 20 summers working at her family’s outdoor resort business. After a unique career journey, she is proud to be a fourth-generation miner, following in her family’s footsteps.

Joining NewRange was a leap into new territory, but Janine thrives on the company’s inclusive atmosphere. “It’s such a great culture. It’s a team effort, like a big family. We help each other out, check in on each other, and genuinely enjoy spending time together, even outside of work.” Whether organizing events, planning a camping trip, or simply golfing with coworkers, she appreciates the strong sense of community.

On the job, Janine’s responsibilities are ever-changing. “No two days are the same. From participating in board meetings and taking minutes, to helping with renovations, or facilitating events – I love the challenge and variety.” As a skilled organizer, stepping up wherever needed has made her a crucial member of the team.

What drives her most is the people. She believes that “the best part of my job is the people I work with. They inspire me to keep growing, not just as a professional, but as a person.” She also enjoys getting to work with colleagues who are experts in their fields daily, and believes that the NewRange team’s expertise is what helps set it apart from others.

Her exposure to the impact of mining on the community helps Janine see the critical role NewRange plays, not just as an employer, but as a vital force supporting families and education throughout the region. “We need industry back in the Range to make things thrive again,” she shares, noting how NewRange and other mining companies can help reverse trends of declining school enrollment and economic challenges in Ely and the surrounding Iron Range. As a teacher and now as a parent, she has seen the drastic decline in school enrollment and funding due to the lack of family-supporting jobs and industry in the area, and believes bringing economic growth to the Range will help reverse this decline and support the education system.

Janine’s commitment to community shines through in her work. Drawn to volunteering, she participates in NewRange committees and local activities, using her planning skills to benefit both her colleagues and Ely at large. She encourages anyone considering a career in mining or at NewRange: “If you have any reservations, give it a shot! It’s eye-opening, and so rewarding to be involved in every aspect of the industry.”

What do you wish more people knew about mining?

I was surprised at how in-depth every aspect of the process is. It’s so much more than just the common misconception of digging a hole in the ground. It’s very precise. There’s so much expertise and effort that goes into research and all of the different studies that are conducted prior to mining. I also wish that more people knew how important minerals are to our daily lives, whether it’s cell phones or cars.

What drew you to work for NewRange specifically?

I didn’t know much about NewRange before I applied. After meeting and interviewing with Gabe in Human Resources, Colin in External Affairs, and Tannice, who is the President and General Manager, I knew I wanted to work with this team.

What aspect of your work at NewRange are you most proud of?

Just to be a part of this team is amazing. Sitting in on the meetings, and just being a part of it, I always get goosebumps. You know? I can’t believe I get to be a part of this. It’s quite an amazing opportunity for me – and for the Iron Range.

What are your favorite parts about living on the Iron Range?

We look out for each other. You know everybody, which is fantastic. And of course, the water, the outdoors, and being able to enjoy nature. We have easy access to water, hiking trails, anything that an outdoor enthusiast would enjoy, which my family and I love.

When you’re not working, where can someone find you?

Outside of work, I’m spending time outside and with my family. Our family spends 99% of our time in the summer on the lake. And with two daughters, I’m Mama Uber all year round! We’re always involved with our kids’ sports and activities, and I coach my daughter’s softball team.
